Simple setup guides for deposits, fees, and reports.
Recommended first preview
Create a Bottle Deposit rule with tag bottle-deposit, open Fee Preview with quantity 2, then enable the rule only after the amount and explanation look correct.
MVP setup steps
- Choose a template: Bottle Deposit, Recycling Fee, Product Fee, Tariff, POS, or COD.
- Set a customer-facing label that buyers can understand.
- Choose a clear scope: product tag, collection, product, cart, or POS location.
- Run Fee Preview before enabling so you can see matched rules, skipped rules, and buyer-facing fee amounts.
- For checkout/POS execution, open Settings, provision the fee product. Active rule changes auto-sync to Shopify checkout; use Settings → Force sync only for retries or media refreshes.
- Review Orders & Fees and export Reports for accounting.
Why FeeLayer requests Shopify access
FeeLayer keeps permissions tied to fee execution and support diagnostics. It does not ask merchants to send API tokens in support tickets.
- Products: match product, variant, tag, and collection rules and provision the FeeLayer system fee variant.
- Orders: record fee events, refund adjustments, and missed-fee / duplicate-fee / amount-mismatch health signals.
- Shopify Functions: create and update Cart Transform execution for required product/cart fee lines.
- Draft orders: create manual order fee lines with FeeLayer reconciliation metadata.
- Custom data: sync active rule configuration and tag/collection rule maps to Shopify-controlled app metafields.
FAQ
Does FeeLayer provide legal advice? No. Merchants must confirm local surcharge, deposit, and tax rules.
Can I add optional charges automatically? No. Shopify requires optional charges to be clearly shown and accepted by the buyer before being added.
Is this a partial-payment deposit app? No. FeeLayer is for product/container deposits and required product fees, not partial payment, split payment, deferred payment, installments, or manual balance collection.
Can FeeLayer automatically detect all payment or shipping methods? Not today. COD-style/payment-fee workflows use buyer consent or cart attributes unless a verified Shopify Plus/payment-customization path is implemented. Shipping-method fees are not sold as an implemented feature until a Shopify delivery-customization path is verified.
How do I make fees appear in checkout? Deploy the Shopify extensions, use product/variant/cart-scope active rules, then use Settings → Force sync only if checkout still shows stale data. Standard required fees are added automatically by the Cart Transform and appear as visible checkout line items; no manual checkout app block is required for that flow.
When do I need to add an extension block manually? Shopify controls theme and checkout block placement. Add the FeeLayer disclosure block in the theme editor when you want product/cart disclosure copy. Add the FeeLayer consent block in Settings → Checkout → Customize only for optional, checkbox, radio, or explicit-acknowledgement fee workflows.
Why use reports? Reports help reconcile deposits, recycling fees, POS fees, and tariff surcharges by rule and channel.
Support
Before contacting support, open Settings and click Copy diagnostic bundle. Paste that JSON into your email so support can see the shop, plan, sync status, fee product/variant IDs, active rule count, last sync error, and health checks without receiving API tokens or secrets.
- When notifications are enabled, FeeLayer records missed-fee, duplicate-fee, and amount-mismatch alerts for the configured alert email. If an alert webhook is configured, those alerts can be forwarded without exposing tokens or secrets.
- Open Activity → Fee health notifications to confirm whether the latest alert is queued, sent, or failed before escalating a support request.
- Include the order name or checkout URL where a fee was missed, duplicated, or had the wrong amount.
- For POS issues, include the POS location and whether the POS tile shows a disabled/gated message.
- For App Review or checkout block visibility, include the exact checkout-editor placement path and a screenshot.
